In Proverbs 1:20-21 we are told that Wisdom speaks. Proverbs 1:33 tells us “But whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster”.
If we are to grow in wisdom we must ask ourselves, when she speaks, do we hear her words and do we heed her words?
In this week’s lesson we will discover how to tune our minds to Wisdom’s voice, the promises for our heeding her voice and the consequences of failing to do so.
How can it possibly be 15 Mothers days have gone by since I last shared the occasion with my mama? In all those years not one day has passed when I didn’t think of her.
Sitting here in the quiet of the dawn, I can almost hear her laughter, I can almost feel her presence. If I am very still, in the recesses of my memory, I can hear the sound of her whistling coming from the kitchen.
The Lord could have given me any mother but He gave me Maggie, and oh how I thank Him for doing so! She may not have been a perfect woman, none of us are, but she loved perfectly. Because of her love, she was a perfect mother, grandmother, wife, friend.
Her passing left a void in our lives. But her love for her family, her kindness, her perseverance and strength, her sometimes fiery yet always caring spirit; the essence of who she was, lives on in the memories and the hearts of all who knew her.
I will always regret that I did not honor and appreciate my mama the way she deserved. My heart aches when I think that she probably never knew just how much we loved her; only when we looked back, did we know ourselves how very special she was. If only we could turn back time.
It’s been thirteen years since I said that goodbye to mama. I can honestly, without doubt say that not one of those 4,745 days have passed that I didn’t think of her.
I am not alone in my memories. To know her was to love her. She was and will always be unforgettable Maggie!

“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. (Daniel 7:13-14)
I am so grateful for the tremendous support I’ve received for this study; the pre-orders have definitely exceeded my expectations.
The final edits have been submitted and baring any unforeseen delays, the study will be released next week!
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction. The Enticement of Sinners (Proverbs 1:7)
We don’t like to think about fearing God do we? We even try to reason it away by saying that fear doesn’t really mean “fear”. After all, God is love, why would a loving God want us to fear Him?
As we continue our study this week we will look at what the Bible has to teach us about “the fear the Lord”.
Buy truth, and do not sell it, Get wisdom and instruction and understanding. (Proverbs 23:23)
In Proverbs 23:23 we are told to “get wisdom,” and the Proverbs themselves are one of the best places to observe and learn that wisdom. God gave us this book to teach us how to walk in wisdom—that is, how to conduct and regulate our lives. It helps us conform our lives to God’s character and standards. (1)
We continue our study tomorrow with Lesson Two: Why Proverbs? If you missed last week, no worries. Just go to Lesson 1: The Beginning of Knowledge to catch up.
I would love to have you come be a part of this study; I welcome any thoughts, comments, or suggestions you may have.
Just a reminder. When you visit, please put your name in the comments so I can know you were there.
In the book of Daniel, the prophet refers to God as “The Ancient of Days,” a title that reveals God’s Triune, eternal existence, His power, His justice, and His ultimate judgment.
As we read the history found in the Old Testament writings, we have an opportunity to witness God, among other things, as Creator, Sustainer, Deliverer, Helper, and Provider. We see His love for His people, His sorrow when they reject Him. We also witness His anger, justice, and ultimate discipline for those who dishonor and disobey Him.
As followers of Christ, it should be the heart of each of us to seek and desire to be like Him. But, how can we do so unless and until we fully understand who He is?
Through this four-part devotional study, you will get to know the Person of “The Ancient of Days” and discover how that knowledge can impact your daily walk in a profound and exciting way.
In light of so much controversy these days concerning “what is truth?” I cannot imagine a better time for us to begin a study on Wisdom.
God has promised in His word that if we seek Wisdom, if we search for her and incline our heart to understanding, He will give it. That is what we aim to do over the next several weeks. I invite you to come along on this “Wisdom Quest Journey”.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7)
I hope the “Songs in the Morning” devotions have been as much of a blessing to you as they have to me. While it’s been a joy for me to share my morning thoughts with you these past few months, I thought it might be time for something new.
Do you feel, as I do, that the world is getting crazier by the day? Honestly, it sometimes seems as if common sense, common courtesy, and common decency have all but vanished. There is plenty of advice out there about how to cope but there is only one sure way I have found that we can “keep our head when all about us are losing theirs”; that way is to immerse ourselves in the sure foundation of God’s word.
So, What’s New?
Starting Monday we will begin a weekly Bible study “Wisdom” from the book of Proverbs.
Full disclosure: If you have been following me for a while this will be a rerun for you, so for you, I guess its not really “new” but more of a refresher course. (I originally posted the study here in 2020).
What to Expect
A new lesson will be posted on Monday mornings. Each lesson will consist of an exposition of one or more verses, a few questions for you to consider, and a reading assignment for the next week’s lesson.
Yes, I know you’re busy. What with school being back in session and the holidays quickly approaching, on top of our already hectic lives, you have little space for anything else. I get it, that’s why I have kept the lessons short in content yet deep in context.
I hope you will stop by Monday and check it out. Who knows, you may find a bit of common sense wisdom you thought was forever lost.
P.S. Please have an enjoyable and safe holiday weekend. See you Monday.
