GoodNews

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” (Isaiah 52:7)

The world sure could sure use some good news about now, wouldn’t you agree?

If you’re a child of God, you’ve got the best news of all, the Good News that is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In this world of confusion, violence and turmoil – you have the message of peace.

In this world of anger – you have the good news of happiness.

In this world of fear and hopelessness – you have the word of salvation.

As followers of Christ we have been entrusted with a great message. It is a message that people desperately need, and I believe one that they are longing for.  So why do we hesitate?  Let us confidently and with joy shout from the mountain top – “Our God reigns”!

Covered

With his feathers he will cover you, under his wings you will find safety. His truth is your shield and armor. (Psalms 91:4 ISV)

LogoSome of you out there are hurting.  You’ve got that deep, inconsolable, gut tearing pain.  You’re wondering if the pain will ever go away.  You are desperate for answers.

See what the Lord says.

He says:  “My word is truth”.  From Genesis to Revelation, every book of the Bible holds a promise.  It is the promise of Messiah, the One Who delivered mankind from the penalty of sin and will one day deliver those of us who follow Him from all our sorrows.  This is the Good News and it is the Truth that sets us free!  We don’t think about it much but there are some things God can’t do, one being God cannot lie.   Paul writes “For all the promises of God in Him (Christ) are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us: (2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV).  If He says it, you can believe it, it is truth.

He says  “I’ve got you covered”.  He spreads His wings and makes a place for you to hide. In the night, in the storm, in the deepest darkest place, He is there with you.  I’m reminded here of Jesus’ words, “…How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing”! (Luke 13:34).  What a beautiful picture of Jesus’ protective love.  He is waiting.  You’ve been given the ultimate invitation, please don’t ignore or reject it.

He says:  “I will protect you”.  The enemy may surround you but under His wings, you are safe.  Christ is a strong tower, a mighty fortress, a wall that cannot be breached.  Our Lord is always standing guard. He never sleeps nor even slumbers.  His eyes are ever upon His children and there is nothing that can come against you that escapes His careful watch or that is beyond His control.

He doesn’t say:  there won’t be troubles.  This is the part where many of us get tripped up.  We’ve been deceived into believing that being a Christian means we will live a happy-go-lucky life, that we’re just going to march into glory without a single care along the way.  That my dear sisters is Satan’s lie, one he uses to disarm us, to throw us off our feet when the struggles come.  To the contrary, Jesus prepares us with the warning – “In the world you will have trouble.  But look, with the warning, He gives us a promise: “I have told you this so that through me you may have peace” and an encouragement “but be courageous–I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33).

An Aside – I know that to some of you this may sound like a lot of religious platitudes and that’s the last thing you want right now.  But let me ask you, what else have you got?  Where else are you going to go?  You’ve tried everything you could try but you’re still hurting. I can tell you, there is no person or no thing in this world that is going to take your pain away.  I know it, and you know it.

In the end, when all your efforts have failed, listen to the counsel of the Psalmist.  Go to Jesus and let Him hide you in the shelter of His wings.

Embracing God

Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. (Psalms 33:18-19)

LogoBehold! He is our Keeper.  His eyes are always on us.  He knows all of our ways, and yet He loves us.

Behold!  He is our Lord and our Savior.  When we embrace His sovereign authority in our lives, we receive His peace, His hope, His joy.

Behold!  He is our Deliverer.  He has set us free from the penalty and power of sin.  He has ransomed our souls from death.

Behold!  He is our Father.  Giver of life, provider of all good things.  He sustains us, protects us, cares for us.

Behold!  He is the LORD!

Forever

“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. (Malachi 3:6)

LogoEverything in this life changes.  Our feelings and thoughts toward one another, our financial situations, our health.  In this crazy world, we never know what to expect, in an instant it can all go wrong.

But not the Lord.  Regardless of what may be going on in the world around us, we need not worry. We can count on Jesus. He is our solid rock.  He is our constant.  His promises are sure.  His mercy and grace and love are certain.

“On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is shifting sand, all other ground is sinking sand.”

Submission

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. (Ephesians 5:22-23)

This doesn’t sound much like what we read in the magazines or hear on TV does it?

I don’t know about you, but I need to be reminded of this command – often. Being stubborn and strong-willed, this is an area in my own life where the Lord has a lot of work to do.

Right now some of you are thinking “you don’t know what my husband is like”, or “what if my husband takes advantage of me”, or maybe “who’s going to meet my needs”.  Wrong thinking, wrong message.

There are three good reasons that I’m pretty sure you think that way.

Reason :   God said you would (To the woman he said, “Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” Genesis 3:16b).

Reason #2:  You tell me that’s how you think (see reason ).

Reason #3:  It’s how my mind works (see reason ).

As the Lord continues to work in my own life concerning submission, I find that my load doesn’t grow heavier, surprisingly (to me) it grows lighter.  As I come to be more and more obedient to God’s command, and more and more dependent on His grace, I am enjoying many blessings in my relationship with my husband and with my Lord.

Still not sure?  Here is another passage that helps me when I struggle with submission:

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, (Colossians 3:23)

When we do all things for the glory of God we don’t see burdens, we see beauty.  Go ahead, try it.

Circumstantial Faith

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, (John 6:68)

I’m so glad the Lord left us this word, it comes to my mind so often and gives me peace.

Sometimes life gets hard and we just want to run away.  But where could we go?  In the passages preceding the one above, we read that some of Jesus’ followers left because the way was too hard. Some of us feel that way from time to time.  We, like the Hebrew children, think it would be easier to go back to Egypt. It wouldn’t. We think that way because we have faulty memory’s. We forget that we were slaves, we worked hard and gained nothing, the master we served was cruel.

But not Jesus.  He is loving and kind, gentle and meek. He gives to His children generously.

When the way gets hard, ask yourself, “to whom shall I go?”  Once you’ve asked that question, go ahead and run; but not away – run to the ONLY One with the words of eternal life, run to Jesus.

Rejoice!

Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered (Psalms 105:2-5)

How great our God!  How awesome His word!  How mighty His instruction!

Have you ever felt in your heart the desire to be closer to God but your mind got in the way?  God knew we would have times like that and so He told us ahead of time what to do.

  • Sing to Him – The Lord inhabits the praises of His people. (Psalm 22:3)
  • Talk about Him – Tell others what He has done for you. (Luke 8:3(0
  • Worship His name – With joy in your heart. (Psalm 100:2)
  • Seek His presence – He waits for you. (Jeremiah 29:13)
  • Remember all His works – .His mercy never fails.(Lamentations 3:21-24)

Begin your day with these and it will be unavoidable – you will find you are in the very presence of the LORD.  As you sing, talk, worship, seek and remember – you will draw near to Him and you will rejoice!

DailyBread

Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. (John 21:12)

Sharing a meal is such an intimate thing.

Since our bodies are sustained by the food we eat, when we break bread together, we are, in effect, sharing life.  In the gospels Jesus talks about food often, both literally and figuratively; both physically and spiritually.  Jesus spoke –  “…open the door and I will come in and dine with you”,  “I am the bread of life”, “take, eat, this is my body”, “feed my sheep”, “come, have breakfast” (that I have prepared for you).

When we pray “give us this day our daily bread”, we are saying “feed me Lord with the Bread of Life.  Sustain and nourish my soul with the meal you have prepared for me.”

David wrote in Psalms 34:8, “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!”  As you begin your day, take time to sit at the Lord’s table, enjoy the feast has prepared for you.
